On the Origin of the Type Ia Supernova Width-luminosity Relation
نویسنده
چکیده
Brighter Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) have broader, more slowly declining B-band light curves than dimmer SNe Ia. We study the physical origin of this width-luminosity relation (WLR) using detailed radiative transfer calculations of Chandrasekhar mass SN Ia models. We find that the luminosity dependence of the diffusion time (emphasized in previous studies) is in fact of secondary relevance in understanding the model WLR. Instead, the essential physics involves the luminosity dependence of the spectroscopic/color evolution of SNe Ia. Following maximum-light, the SN colors are increasingly affected by the development of numerous Fe II/Co II lines which blanket the B-band and, at the same time, increase the emissivity at longer wavelengths. Because dimmer SNe Ia are generally cooler, they experience an earlier onset of Fe III to Fe II recombination in the iron-group rich layers of ejecta, resulting in a more rapid evolution of the SN colors to the red. The faster B-band decline rate of dimmer SNe Ia thus reflects their faster ionization evolution. Subject headings: radiative transfer – supernovae; cosmology

The Type Ia Supernova Width-luminosity Relation
Observations of type Ia supernovæ at high redshifts have become an important tool for studying the geometry of the universe. The relation between the duration of the peak phase of a type Ia supernova’s lightcurve and its luminosity (broader is brighter) forms the cornerstone of this measurement, yet it is a purely empirical relation. In this paper we show that the relation is a natural conseque...
متن کاملLuminosity Functions of Type Ia Supernovae and their Host Galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
The sample of 137 low-redshift type Ia supernovae with 0.05 ≤ z ≤ 0.3 obtained from the SDSS-II Supernova Survey for the southern equatorial stripe of 300 square degrees is used to derive the luminosity functions of type Ia supernovae and of their host galaxies in the gri passbands. We show that the luminosity function of type Ia supernova host galaxies matches well with that of galaxies in the...
متن کاملOn the Relation Between Peak Luminosity and Parent Population of Type Ia Supernovae: A New Tool for Probing the Ages of Distant Galaxies
We study the properties of Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) as functions of the radial distance from their host galaxy centers. Using a sample of 62 SNe Ia with reliable luminosity, reddening, and decline rate determinations, we find no significant radial gradients of SNe Ia peak absolute magnitudes or decline rates in elliptical+S0 galaxies, suggesting that the diversity of SN properties is not rel...
متن کاملPhotometric and Spectroscopic study of a highly reddened type Ia supernova SN 2003 hx in NGC 2076
We present UBV RI CCD photometry and optical spectra of the type Ia supernova SN 2003hx which appeared in the galaxy NGC 2076, obtained till ∼ 146 days after the epoch of B band maximum. The supernova reached at maximum brightness in B band on JD 245 2893 ± 1.0 with an apparent magnitude of 14.92 ± 0.01 mag which was estimated by making template fits to the light curves. SN 2003hx is an example...
متن کاملThe Distance to Supernova 1998aq in NGC3982
The distance to NGC3982, host galaxy to the Type Ia supernova SN1998aq, is derived using 32 Cepheids discovered in archival multi-epoch Hubble Space Telescope observations. Employing recent Large Magellanic Cloud Cepheid period-luminosity relations and absolute zero point, we find a distance to NGC3982 of 20.5±0.8 (r)±1.7 (s)Mpc, including both random (r) and systematic (s) uncertainties, and i...
